About Northumberland Editions

Prefaces

A standard undergraduate music education assumes working knowledge with a canon of composers and pieces in the Western art music tradition. This canon, familiar to pianists, vocalists, and orchestral instrumentalists is largely inaccessible on the guitar.

The extent to which guitarists engage with the canon is through transcription. Northumberland Editions specializes in publishing transcriptions for the guitar from the wider Western art music tradition with the goal of bringing guitarists closer to that tradition.

Each collection of transcriptions has a preface that contextualizes the music in some way, exploring the genre, period, or style of the work.
